Feature Talk - Joel Kemp - Keeping Your Code Sublime w/ Smart Tooling !

Wednesday 15 Jul 2015 from 6:30pm - 8:30pm

Hi Nodesters! We've got a feature talk this month!

Feature Talk - Joel Kemp - Keeping Your Code Sublime w/ Smart Tooling

The hardest part of joining a new company or open source project is wrangling a large codebase. Which files do we start looking at? How do we know if we're breaking other parts of the system? IDEs have offered tools like autocomplete, debuggers, and type checking, but getting up to speed is still a challenge. In this talk, I'll discuss the tools available to us JavaScript developers and how understanding dependency trees via static analysis can take us closer to lessening the skill gap between newcomers and seniors. I'll also showcase Dependents: an open source, static-analysis driven, Sublime Text plugin for navigating large, front-end (AMD, CommonJS, ES6, and Sass) codebases.

Lightning Talk - Gleb Bahmutov - Self-updating software using NPM

As soon as your project depends on specific 3rd party modules' versions, your application falls behind. Gleb will show how to automatically keep each dependency up to date, how to estimate the probability that any particular update will be successful and how to release a new version of your software without breaking everyone using it!

Lightning Talk - Jon Martin - Competitive Coding with Starcoder!

Jon will show us how Node.js was the natural choice for a scalable, fast game platform mashup of multiplayer Asteroids, Minecraft and Codecademy.  Started over a year ago, students use either a block based or Javascript coding console in the game to configure their space ship, create a home planet and populate it with various life forms. This innovation opens up exciting possibilities for real time peer learning. Thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign they are hoping to have many schools around the world use the game and join the fun!

***Note on security***: As always, please ensure your full name is listed on your Meetup profile, if you RSVP yes to join. Building security will need it to grant you access to the event.

Thanks to Shutterstock for hosting! It's going to be a great event! See you there!
